INDECENT LANGUAGE
LABOURER SENT TO GAOL. WANGANUI, April 1. Charged in the Magistrates’ Court, Wanganui, today with using indecent language to a police constable, James Galway, aged 41, labourer, was sentenced by Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., to 14 days’ imprisonment. The magistrate described the language used as very filthy. On a second count, that of assaulting Jack Waiwera, Galway was convicted and discharged. Sergeant R. J. S. Whiting, who prosecuted, told the court that Galway and a Maori had an altercation on the river bank near the Town Bridge, yesterday afternoon. The police were called by telephone, and Constable R. D. Gardner saw Galway strike the Maori, who did not retaliate. As the constable approached, Galway used obscene language to him. Asked if he had anything to say, Galway said the Maori shaped up to him and he acted in self-defence.
in passing sentence the magistrate said he could see Galway was a drunkard, and he did not accept his story.
