WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB. MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age|’ Special.) The monthly meeting of stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club was held in the club’s building, Featherston, yesterday, there being present Messrs. Q. Donald (chairman), R. N. Barton, C. J. Nix, Roy Donald, H. Lawson, D. C. Collins, T. Benton, J. W. Card, D. H. S. Riddiford, W. Howard Booth, R. A. Donald and N. C. C. Shepherd (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. D. Cameron, A. C. Pearce, W. J. Martin and Jack Martin. Receipts since last meeting were £2l 6s. and accounts passed for payment totalled £l5O 16s. Id. Mrs. W. Barton and family wrote acknowledging expression of sympathy. The president of the Wairarapa Labour Representation Committee and the nev. J. H. Sykes, Vicar of Greytown, wrote thanking the Club for the use of the Erounds for their pieinc.
The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a totalisator permit. The successful tenderers for privileges at the Easter meeting were:— No. 1, Mr. F. C. Yule, Carterton; No. 2, Mr. E. J. Lane, Carterton.
It was reported that the grounds and buildings were in good order for the Easter meeting. The river protection work is practically completed. QUEEN CARNIVAL. The committee for the local Queen held their euchre party at the Anzac Hall last night. The attendance was good. The prize-winners were as follows:—Ladies, Mrs Rewai 1, Mrs Cassidy 2; consolation, Miss J. Ruane; men’s, Mr P. Saba 1, Mr R. Stuart 2; consolation, Mr J. Rea. Lucky prizes were won by Miss K. Ruane and Mr R. Jepson. BOROUGH LIBRARY. BOOKS ADDED. The following books have been added to the library:—'Commander of the Mists,” by D. L. Murray; “Thieves’ Picnic,” Leslie Charteris; “Dear Lady Disdain,” Phyllis Waite; “A Giant in Chains,” Marjorie Bowen; “Great Argument,” Phillip Gibbs; “Castle Corner’,’ Joyce Cary. Mrs. C. Elgar, “Fernside,” sails from Wellington on April 7, for England, where she expects to stay several months. The Rev. J. C. W. Mutter is taking charge of the Mangaweka Parish until the vicar-elect arrives from England in May. Mrs. S. G. Grant, Pahautea, who recently underwent an operation in a private hospital is now convalescing in Masterton. Mrs. L. E. Balton sails for Cape Town on Tuesday next, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Quinn. Mrs. Wallace of “Herbert Wallace House,” Lower Hutt, paid a brief visit to Featherston on Wednesday. The St. John’s Ladies’ Guild held its annual meeting in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs. Algar Williams; secretary, Miss Barnard; treasurer, Mrs. Edwards. A welcome was extended to Mrs. Holland, who gave a short talk. Several new members were also welcomed. Afternoon tea was served. BOWLING. In a match for the Pragnell Cup. played at Featherston on Wednesday. R. G. Vile (Greytown) defeated W. Hiegison (the holder) by 19 points to 8. "
