The Works Committee of the Carterton Borough Council is making, an inspection to-day of the low pressure pipe-line from the river to the reservoir, which has been giving trouble of late. The Carterton Borough staff assisted by relief workers, have recently relaid the pipe-line for a distance of several chains, where trouble has been experienced, roots of trees having penetrated the pipes. This was at a spot not far from the intake at the Maungatiriri River, and the 12in. cement pipes have been laid on the southern side of the road, the pipes being treated with a special preparation to resist root growth. While the work was in progress advantage was taken to clean out the top intake and also the reservoir. During this period the town was on the low pressure supply, and a pressure of 901 b. to the square inch was recorded on the gauge in Carterton. This was possible owing to the fact that a badger has been put through twice to clean the sin. and 6in. pipes from the reservoir to the township. When the supply from the top reservoir is also turned into the mains the pressure gauge will record 1301 b. to the square inch.
