THE Wairarapa Mercury. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1867. THE TRAMWAY AGAIN.
The paramount importance of- this subject must he our .excuse for again recurring to it. Some may favor a lake project, others believe in a railway and locomotives, but all will admit—whe have seen in Wellington two horses drawing in one load the weight of six ordinary loads—that a tramway and horse locomotion is a feasible plan, a simple project and a cheap undertaking* which commends itself to the practical man of small means and the speculative man with large capital. Will: it pay? most thinking people null say. The class of people who ask- this home question are probably “investors,” but the public at large have a right to ask the same question and they can hardly be expected to support the project unless a satisfactory explanation is given. This we hope will now be done, for we understand that certain gentlemen in Wellington of practical ability and influence are endeavouring to form a “ Provisional Committee” to enquire into the whole matter of a Tramway from Wellln gton to Masterton, but should not the settlers of the Wairarapa bestir themselves in this affair which so deeply interests them ? We are neither enthusiast nor cold-water-throwers. ,We deal neither in bunkum nor wet blankets—but we do believe in the practicability of a Tramway and that it will eventually pay well. The Government may aid us ; they ought to do so; but if we wait till the Government do commence the Tramway we depend on a broken stick for support. God helps those that help themselves and God help us—if we have mainly to depend on a Government, with a declining revenue, to make the proposed Tramway.
