REPORT OF THE MASTERTON CHURCH BUILDING COMMITTEE.

The Commitee appointed by the Public Meeting held on November 3, 1865, to prepare a Plan of a Church, and to consider ways and means to build sucb Church, have now to present the following Report:— , After several Committee Meetings had been held, apian, drawn up originally by Mr Boys, fora Church in Greytown, was adopted, and having been submitted to the Standing Committee ot the Diocesan Synod of Wellington for their approval, tenders for the erection of the ■same were invited, with the following result: — GODFREY BUSSELL’S TENDER.

Making a total of £330 5 0 ! ?At a Committee meeting held January 14, 1866, .it was. unanimously agreed to accept Messrs Donald and Parsonage’s Tender. During the erection of the Church it was found necessary to strengthen the building by buttresses differently constructed from those in the plan. An expense of £2O was thereby incurred. To this the Committee have to add the cost of the windows, which by the specification

Making a total of £396 13 6 to meet tlie expense of the erection of the Church, subscription lists were opened and contributions invited from all the settlers in the district of Wairarapa, and from the owners of property but not resident therein. A very liberal response has been made to the appeal, for which the Committee have to return their sincere thanks. Where all have acted so liberally it would be invidious to point out any particular help given, but the Committee feel that they may mention the very liberal gift of one no longer of the church militant, for he has been called to his rest, Major Coote. He promised to give a tithe of the total sum collected, putting down his name for £25. After the building was erected, the Chairman of the Committees wrote him a note reminding him of his promise. At that time he was so ill that no business matters were mentioned to him, but rallying again he was made acquainted with it, and at once—almost the last act in his life—he wrote eut a cheque for £ls; making his subscription, £4O, The total amount of subscriptions on the list is £ s d 290 0 10

To this add : * Grant from the Standing Committee of the Diocesan Synod of 'Wellington 20 0 0 Proceeds of Fete 38 5 4 Collections at the opening services 16 17 9 Money borrowed on debentures bearing interest at 10 per cent per annum 100 0 0 Total ...„ £465 3 11 Some pf the subscriptions have not yet been paid, it is proposed to fence the acre in, and this with a few small items of expense yet to be incurred will probably use up the balance in hand. The Church being completed it was opened, for divine service on the 10th March last.

The Committee have to draw the attention of Church members to the debt upon the Church £l9O, and to ask their liberal help to meet it. In order to do so they would recommend the adoption of the Offertory Collection fortnightly, that the seats in the Church be let, and that subscription lists be opened. In conclusion the Committee are thankful to have been allowed to erect the first Episcopal Church in the Wairarapa District, trusting that their effort to secure the better outward observance of Divine Worship may prove effectual to the glory of God and to our own united good. WM. HONALDSON, Chairman. Masterton, August 22, 1867.
