LOCAL NEWS.

Fiee.—We regret to report the total destruction by fire on Tuesday, of a bam the property of Mr. Wilkie of Greytown. Tne whole of his wheat and oats were destroyed. The loss is estimated at upwards of £IOO. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.

Native Land Court. —On Saturday last the Sittings of the Native Land Court were adjourned “ sine die.” There were only five out of thirty-six claims disposed of, partly in consequence of the surveys and maps not' being complete, and partly owing to the “ dog in the manger" tactics adopted by the wily chief Manihera, and other natives, who when they could not substantiate their own claims, succeeded in raising objections to the claims of others. This was more especially the case with regard to the block which originally constituted the eastern half of the site of the township of Greytown. The claims disposed of were as follows:—The Mairirikapua block to Wi Waka and nine others. Part of Maramamau to Manihera and others, and part to Matiaha, Wi Kingi and others, Kaupokahinga and Waihenga were divided by the Court into three portions, to Matire and others; to Ngature and others; and to Matiha and others. Part of the Te Ore Ore claim to Marakaia and Eaniera, The Government as we have already said, succeeded in establishing its claims through the instrumentality of Mr Wardell, to part of the Maramamau and Waihenga blocks, and two claims on the part of the natives were dismissed. We trust that no delay will take place in the holding of the next sittings of the Court, as the final adjustment of these claims will prove a benefit alike to the district and to all parties interested.

Moeoa School. —Last week the Government School Inspector held an examination of the Teacher and the Scholars at the Moroa School, near Greytown, the result proved “ that the School was well classed and taught, the children having passed a satisfactory examination.” Land Sale.—We direct the particular attention of the public to the great Wairarapa Land Sale advertised elswhere, which will take place at Wallace’s Auction Room on Thursday, the sth proximo. It will be seen that at this sale property of varied extent and quality, and situated in all parts of the district, will be submitted to public competition. Money expended in the purchase of land in this district has proved almost invairably a most profitable investment.

Sheep Management —We beg to acknowledge the receipt of a volume from the Melbourne [press entitled, “ The Management of Sheep and Stations by James C. Jordan.” We shall make extracts from the work in . the Yeoman Column of this journal, and in the mean time recommend its purchase by the sheep. farmers .in the .Wairarapa.. _ Arrival of Mr Carter.— The arrival at Wellington of Mr Mrs and Miss Carter at Wellington, by the s.s. Kaikoura, is of -local interest, not only from his long connection with the district, but because bis return to the colony will enable the reserves at Greytown to be at once put on a more satisfactory footing than at present. We w r ould suggest to the Provisional Directors of the Public Hall Company the propriety of at once applying to Mr Carter for one of the reserved acres as a site for the Hall, which, we have no doubt, he would be willing to grant on the terms on which they have been previously granted to various religious bodies.
