REPORTING THE DEBATES.

We believe that very few papers have taken advantage of the offer of the Government relative to this subject. We have reason to know that the expense of a reporting staff will he much greater than the Government imagine.. Their scheme, however has for this session virtually received the sanction of the House, and a Committee has been appointed to superintend its execution. Mr Vogel when the question was under discussion said:

He believed the best mode of reporting the debates was -jf subsidising the local press. The publication of full reports of the House throughout the country would be of infinite use, aud he believed every member who voted against the proposed subsidy to the newspapers last year, regretted it, and if the Government would come down to the House and ask for such a subsidy again this session or next one, they would probably get it. Mr Stafford said he agreed with most of the remarks of the lion, member, but at the commencement of the’session Lie local press was not in a position to enter into such arrangements on mere speculation, but if the House wished it, steps might be taken to carry the proposal,of the lion member into effect next session. He would, however, call the attention of the House to the fact that they must make provision for such a purpose beforehand. '
