VOTE BY BALLOT.
We believe that vote by ballot is not so popular a question at home as it was some years ag’o. The truth is that vote by ballot does not secure to the voter those advantages which its advocates profess to expect from it. The elective franchise Loth here and in England is a trust, and trustees ought not to hide their acts from those who are to be affected by them. A secret vote is an encouragement to lying, and a cloak for the comfort of hypocrites. Secrecj r is hateful to Englishman, who like everything done open and above hoard, and it is moreover repugnant to the spirit of all AngloSaxon institutions. Intimidation is no doubt bad recourse to in times of public excitement, but let the intimidator be punished, and do not offer a premium to hypocrisy.
The above remarks lias been occasioned by the following notice of motion which was to be brought forward by Mr Reynolds oil Thursday evening
That with a view to establish a more satisfactory method of recording the votes of electors for members of the House of Representatives and Provincial Councils, it is desirable that such votes should be taken by ballot, and that a Bill be brought in for this purpose.
We trust that the House will reject the motion.
