TOWN NEWS OF THE WEEK.

(from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Friday, G a.m. Nothing of importance has been done in the Council since my last. The only measure of any consequence introduced by the Government, the Licensing Amendment Act, has been thrown’.'out of its hands, and is now in those of Mr. Renall. The same gentlemen has introduced a Bill to grant land to Volunteers on certain conditions which was opposed by the Government but supported by the wholeof theWairarapamembers. Though the motion for its introduction was sought to be shelved by Mr. Borlaso moving the previous question, the motion was carried, and the Government defeated, but there was no talk of resignation this time, and it will not be turned out of office unless by the passing of a direct vote of want of confidence.

The select Committee on the Patent Slip Contract and holding their sittings in public, but the newspaper are not allowed to publish the reports of its proceedings. Nothing not previously known has yet seen the light. Mr Crosbie Ward has sailed for England in the s's. Mataura, and it is reported that Mr. Whitaker has resigned his seat in the General Assembly. Thus two leading members of Parliament have retired from public life; Messrs. Fox and bewell are in England, and Mr ritzgerald has accepted a non-political appointment. These five gentlemen for eloquence knowledge, experience, and ability are not to be matched by any five members of the present house or the present Government, and they will be sadly missed on the opposition benches. A motion for a Committee on the sale of land within the Masterton Hundred lias been carried on a division bv 14 against 10. It is to be hoped that Mr. Lenall this time will bring the enquiry to a satisfactory termination. J In the Provincial Council on Friday the following motions of more or less local interests were disposed of. “ WheSl! r"? aS H d - the IWi " ci!l1 Secretary—- .
