They met, were introduced, and bow’d Felt rather flurried, nervous, shy ; And held converse, in tone not loud, About the weather, season, sky. They parted, shook hands, bade “Goodbye : ” She thinks him quite “ a nice young man,” While he feels quite disposed to try And win her favour if he can.

They meet again ; they talk has, now, Not such an astronomic cast: They creep to literature somehow; Their friendship promises to last. They meet again, now, here, now there, And gradually get intimate : He calls on her,— reception fair; He calls again, and she's elate.

He lends her books; they read together, Or he, perhaps, reads out for both ; And, when auspicious is the weather. They take a stroll, she nothing loth. His call, their strolls, more frequent grow He thinks time dull not spent with her And her face brightens when her beau (So he is now, her friends concur,) Calls, or sends his pink-edged note, If distance haply doth prevent The use of more immediate throat To give his fondling feelings vent.

And now long since, both have opined That each was for the other made; To tell their story both have pined ; He longs to “pop,” but feels afraid. But soon, impatient of his doubt, And worn with hoping, fearing, strife, He takes good heart, and bolts it out, And, blushing, she becomes his wife.

Then in conclusion, gents, beware Earth’s dearest, queerest work, the fair! Beware too hastily to hop From the “ introduction ” to the “ pop I ”
