FAREWELL TO CAPTAIN BERRY AT PIRONGIA.

(Own Correspondent.)

A large number of residents from all parts of the district assembled at the Pirongia Public Hall on Thursday evening, on the occasion of a presentation being made to Captain Geo. Berry who has resigned from the No 2 Waikato mounted rifles. Lieut. A. E. Fear presided, and a most enjoyable programme was rendered comprising a cornet solo by Mr Dil, (encored), violin solo Quarter-master Moeller (encored) and songs by Misses Hodgson, R. Fear, N. Fear, and Messrs J. Kay, and C. Peat (encored). The accompanists for the evening were Misses R. Fear, Aubin, and Mandeno, and Mr A. Gifford. Colonel A. Bell, in a fitting speech spoke °f the untiring efforts of Captain Berry for the we! fare of the regiment. His resignation was one to be regretted, as Captain Berry had taken an active interest in the corps, since its formation in 1898. Two years later he took command, and to his efforts the enthusiasm of the company was very largely due. On behalf of the 4th regiment, he presented Captain Berry with an arm chair as a small mark of esteem. The recipient responded in a short but appropriate speech, which was loudly applauded. Supper was then partaken of and dancing commenced, and was kept up until 2 a.m. Dance music was supplied by Messrs H. Jenson, C. Peat and A. Gifford.
