KIHIKIHI.

(Own Correspondent.) . On Tuesday evening a large assembly congregated for this season’s final meeting of the Literary and Debating Society. Throughout the session, debates upon previously selected subjects have proved to be the most popular class of entertainment, and therefore it was decided the closing meeting should take this form. Mr R. Teague and Mr J. Gill wei'e appointed leading speakei*s, but owing to the unavoidable absence of the former, the chairman (Mr O. Price Owen) kindly took his place. An animated discussion upon the advantages of “Town versus Country Life,” sufficed to make the evening one. of the most memorable of the season.

Although eloquently defending his cause and presenting a rare picture of country life, Mr Owen's arguments were quite outweighed by the city's dazzling attractions and previously unheard of advantages as enumerated by Mr J. Gill. The benefits derived from attending societies of this kind may be gauged when a novitiate (Mr J. Gill) was successful in winning his first debate. It is to be hoped that the educational value and pleasant recreation offered will be remembered, and the public display due enthusiasm when meetings are resumed next season.

The social to mark the closing of this session has been arranged for September Bth. Further particulars will be published later.
