OTOROHANGA.

(Own Correspondent.)

The householders' meeting, which had been adjourned, to elect a School Committee for the ensuing year was heltl on Monday evening. There was a fair attendance and Mr Forster was voted to the chair. The following gentlemen were elected : Messrsßurnand, Ormsby, Piggot, Miller, Whyte, Rhodes and Elliott.

At the first meeting of the School Committee following on the election, Mr C. Miller was elected Chairman.

A meeting of the Roman Catholic Church buildingcommittee was held at Mrs Forster's residence on Saturday evening last, it was decided to hold a monster euchre drive on Wednesday, June 14th, in Turner's Hall, Otorohanga, to be followed by a dance; refreshments to be pro-

vided. Mr Neary, of Otorohanga, has given a handsome military bridle as a gentlemen's prize, and Father Brennan a silver-backed hair brush for the successful lady. It is expected that a large attendance will reward the committee's efforts.

The second cattle and sheep sale was held in the Otorohanga Saleyards Company's yards on May 26th. There was a very good mustering of all classes, and three auctioneering firms sold on the same day. Sheep were not in great demand, but most of the cattle sold at very satisfactory prices. Heifers in calf appear to be most looked for, as a large number of the settlers are either going in for _dairying or are increasing their herds. Farmers are finding that this district is particularly adapted for dairying. Mrs Holden held her fortnightly dance in Turner's hall last Saturday evening. About twenty-five couples enjoyed themselves on a good floor. The regular meeting of the Otoroaanga branch "of the N.Z. Farmers' Union was held to-day (Friday). The Empire Picture Company intend to show here on Friday evening and I understand it is the intention of the proprietors to show here weekly. They get a crowded house each time. The Otorohanga football team arrived home by the late goods train in great glee last Saturday having defeated Mangapeehi by nine to three after a hard game. Tom Emery scored a try, and Bert Clarke a try and a penalty goal. Jim Clarke unfortunately met with bad luck both for himself and the team as he got his ankle sprained and probably will not be able to play again this season.
