The Premier of Cape Colony.
Gets an Unfavourable Reception in Capetown. Tlie Police Save Him from Rough Usage. Our cable messages recently made reference to the Premier of Cape Colony meeting with a hostile reception. A Cape paper to hand by the last mail thus refers to the matter: — After the demonstration in Greenmarket Square, crowds of citizens patrolled the streets in all directions with flags, singing “ God Save the Queen.” One very significant incident took place. About 1.30 Mr Schreiner was observed going into the Party Cafe. Immediately a tremendous crowd assembled outside and groans were freely given for Schreiner, and the whole Ministry was served in a like manner. On Mr Schreiner, making his appearance a rush was made for him, but Inspector Clarke with a force of mounted police kept them aback lest he would have received a severe 1 mauling. They escorted the Prime Minister to the Houses of Parliament with deafening groans and more than one attempt was made to reach him. On his arrival at the Parliament gates Mr Schreiner attempted to address the crowd, but they were incensed and would have none of him. His remarks were therefore unable to be heard except by a few near him. The Loyalists commenced singing
the “ National Anthem.” Howovei Mr Schreiner took no notice and con
tinued to harangue until the cries of “ hats off” became too threatening even for him to ignore. CJieers were given lustily for Sir A. Milner, Mr Chamberlain, Lord Roberts, and again and again repeated for Mr Rhodes. Eventually Mr Schreiner replied to the Colonial Office amid groans and cries of “ what price ammunition,” “ down with him,” and “ send the others out for a dose.”
Fully ten thousand people had by this time assembled, but on Mr Schreiner entering the building they dispersed quietly, seemingly well satisfied with their work. All is quiet now.
