(Own Correspondent.) Napier, Yesterday. Mafeking day will be long remembered by Napier people. We have celebrated the relief to-day with a fervid enthusiasm well woithy of the historic event. To* degree the fact that the news had not the official stamp prevented the jubilationi being entered upon with that happy spontaniety which markod the “Kiraber ley and Ladysmith relief ” (the latter especially so), and even the civil authorities were at first inclined to hold aloof until more definite news came to hand. But gradually the infection spread, and it was not long before tlx clanging of the firebell announced tbit the Mayor had decided to “ colebrate. 1 ' By this time the railway whistle, Bob johns’ and Holt’s sirens, the church, school, and firebells were joining in merry noisy chorus spreading the good news far and wide. Crowds poured into the town, business places and public buildings were gaily decorated with flip and other patriotic emblems, haitily organised bands played those airs which the present war has made us so familiar with, and generally the scene was ona ol unbounded rejoicing. During the afternoon a composite band gave a conoert Oil the Parade fa enlleetinn hnincr tftlfffl

up in aid of the Indian Famine ReW Fund), and to-night the volunteW paraded and fireworks wero discharged Altogether the manner in which tin relief has been celebrated here is dfr tinctly creditable, and ample testimony if such were needed of our loyalty. The postal officials hit upon a happy method of showing their interest in tin proceedings. On their newly erectei flagstaff was hoisted first the Union Jack and then a white Hag (the Boers) betf ing the device “ Mafeking mail sorted Ever to the fore the Spit people ss* the following cable to Colonel BadenPowell: —“ Well done, delighted yo* have threshed them.—Port Napier.” Massey Watson, who some time achieved notoriety in Auckland, w* before the Court this morning chargw with obtaining, a suit of clothes * Waipukurau on false pretences.
