Festivities at Flemington.
(occasional correspondent.) In response to an invitation from Mr and Mrs Fleming a large number of ladiea and gentlemen from different parts of Hawke's Bay journeyed to Flemington, on Friday last, to celebrate the 21st birthday of Miss Fleming. On arriving at the beautifnl homestead a hearty reoeption was met with. Iq lees time than it takes to write it, the geests were made to feel as muoh at home ns
if they had lived tbere for years. An immense granery had been beautifully deoorated and prepared for dancing ; and it was here that, after dinner, the feetivites were commenced in earnest.
A long programme was gone ihrongh and during the intervals betweon the dances, songs were sung by Miss 0. Bailey, Messrs J. Fleming, F. Brookett, Gayfer, J. Owen and A. Robottom ; also a recitation by Mr T. Lucy. Each item was deservedly applauded.
Half way through the programme an adjournment was made for sapper, wbioh was served in a most elaborate style, rare delicacies being in abundanoe. Needless to say this was done fall jaitice to. Daring the sapper the healths of Miss Fleming and the host and hostess were dnly proposed and drunk with musical honors, the former in a neat little speoch by Mr Gayfer and the latter by Mr Winlove. Mr Oastles took advantage of a lull and in a sborl, neat little Bpeech on behalf of the employees of Flcmington station presented Miss Fleming with a beantifnl gold brooch set with diamonds and rubies. On behalf of Miss Fleming, Mr Fleming responded to the toasts and thanked the employees for their beautiful gift. After sapper dancing wna again indulged in and was kept up until about 5 am. A very pleasant day was speot on Saturday and dancing and singing again commenced in tbe ovening and were kept np until 10 30 p.m. Tbe music for tbe daooes was supplied by Miss Bailey (piano), Messrs Oastles and Brockett (violins). The duties of M O. were oarried out by Mr E. G Scott
I will not attempt to describe the beautiful dresses worn at the ball, know ing that I would fail miserably in a poor attempt to distinguish between one material aud auothur. My limited knowledge of those matters will only permit me to say that Miss Fleming herself wore an exquisite evening dress, pure white in oolor.
The party broke np at mid day on Sunday, after spending, as one and all admitted, two of the plessantest days that it bad ever beodffrrir 4* to enjoy.
