WAIPUKURAU.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE WAIPAWA MAIL.) Dear Sir, —The second week ,of September, 1878, will be an epocli to not a few in this district. On the morning of Saturday, the 14th, I was sauntering about Waipukurau, admiring the change which a few showers had lpade on the face of Nature ; everything looked lovely ; gratitude beamed on every face, and expressions of thankfulness were on every tongue, because of the timely rain. Such was the happy state of the good people of Waipukuran when the Waipawa laddie came round with the first copy of the Waipawa Mail, and after making allowance for the weather, the Mail was very kindly received. I got a copy from Mine Host, and sat down in the verandah to read and to hear. I was pleased with it as a first issue, and the unanimous expression of opinion I heard was one of pleasure and hopeful anticipations of success for the Waipawa Mail, and your recent issues have confirmed the favourable impressions then made. May you prosper and become a power for good in tliis district. Seek to be an educator of the people by making your columns the vehicle of healthy mental palmhnn to your readers ; the supply will create the demand, and the ultimate result will be a real success. Well, sir, sitting that Saturday morning on the Tavistock verandah, looking over your first copy, I thought could I not do something for the readers of the Mail, although it was but to note the change and progress going on in the various districts I might visit, or other matters of interest I meet with in my wanderings. I had just been musing over my first night’s accommodation in the Tavistock, and my last. Ido not need to say anything about 1113* last night’s accommodation there, its character can be guessed at by not a few ; there are but a few about now who could guess the character of my first night’s accommodation, when I tell them that there were only two bunks in the wharc. But'more ou the subject of change at another time, with your permission. I am, &c., T A VI STOCK.
