Supervisor’s Report. Mr Mandeno submitted the follow ing report:—

The fine weather during the past month has enabled splendid progress to be made with our work, and the projected metalling and gravelling jobs are nearly ail out of hand or else approaching completion. Metalling.—McCutcheon’s hill, on the Whatawhata Swamp road is completed; 21 chains have received a good coating of metal, and although the coat has been great—nearly £lO a chain —the job is a substantial and permanent one. 1 think that in future a certain proportion, say, half, of the money available for the maintenance of this road should be spent in limestone metal in preference to the local material now used, and which is not permanent. Metalling on the Ohaupo-Te Awamutu road near Ranby’s and Bourne’s is completed; also two short gaps have been metalled on that portion of the road within the Pukekura Riding. The metalling ordered on the Tuhikaramea road beyond the railway crossing has been done, and that on the road near Ohaupo Cemetery is in progress. Metalling on the Frontier road, and also on the low road between Te Awamutu and Pirongia is finished for the season. 1 have had a supply of metal for repairs carted to the Tuhikaramea Swamp road, to be put on as required through the winter. The only remaining rnetalilng for this season will he in the neighbourhood of Te Awamutu, where several short pieces remain to bo done, and also a considerable amount of repairs will he necessary on the Kihikihi -Te Awamutu road. Gravelling contracts have been carried out on the Kihikihi back road, Pirongia-Te Awamutu road, road near the Te Rore creamery, Ngaroto-Paterangi road. OhaupoPaterangi road, Hamilton-Ohaupo road, and Whatatwhata Swamp road; also some needed repairs on Excelby’s road near Frankton. The Graders. —The No. 1 machine recommenced work last week, and is at presedt engaged scraping in sand in the Hamilton and Newcastle Ridings. No. 2 machine has done a part of the required work on the new road leading to the new bridge over the Puniu now approaching completion. The machine is now scraping sand on roads in the Pukekura Riding. Works in Progress. —The following works are well advanced, viz., an extension of Robinson’s gravelling contract at Paterangi, a further portion of low Pirongia road sanding, sanding on the road leading to Mr Sing’s farm, sanding on the road near Jos. McNaul’s at Paterangi, raising and metalling low part of the road liable to be Hooded between To Awamutu and Greenhill, some gravelling and repairs on the ObaupoHamilton and Cambridge roads, also near Moanovale. In addition to the above, various small maintenance works are being attended to in nume-

rous places. Heather’s Creel: Bridge. —On removing the old decking it lias 'been found that the stringers are—some of them —in very bad condition, and repairs of some kind are necessary. In view of Hie proposal to grade the hill at the southern approach, 1 would recommend that the whole of the top structure bo removed and renewed, placing the deck 2ft above its present level. This suggestion is subject to the piles proving to be in a sound condition, which so far appears to he the case.

Culvert on the NgaruavvahiaWhatawhata Road. tended for a good while past to replace a decayed wooden culvert with large (2ft Gin) pipes. I have lately had the work put through. Mr Fleming, an adjoining owner of property, complains that the pipes have been put in too high They have, however, been put in at as low a level as the water would permit. Te Rapa-Tc Kowhai Road. —Regarding the expenditure of the grant money on this road, the plans, etc., for the work proposed have now been

received, returned from Wellington officially “approved.” I am, however, quite averse to proceeding with the work at this advanced period of the year, and, with the council’s approval will hold the matter over until the spring. Regarding the acquirement of the necesssary land near the station, there does not seem to be any more hope of finality, as the owners have, so far, declined to sign the agreemeent. Accounts.
