Hautapu Drainage Board.

On Saturday afternoon the above Board met at Cambridge, there being present Messrs A. McFarlanc, chairman, F. Ross, R. Swayne, W, J. Andrews, and W. Tyler. The engineer, Mr E. J. Fairburn, reported that he had taken the levels of the lower portions of the "A" and "B" drains, and found that they would require more doing at them than he at first anticipated. The"A" drain, the one that empties into the Eureka drain, bad very little fall at the outlet; and to make it thoroughly effective something would have to be done to the Eureka drain. The"B" drain, that is the"one that discharges itself at Matangi, would also need deepening in the lower reaches, to get a good fall. After considerble discussion it was decided that the engineer take the levels of the Eureka drain, with a view to obtaining the extra fall required, and report to a committee of the chairman, Messrs Andrews and Tyler, who were empowered to deal with it. It was decided to deepen the "B2" drain 4 feet at peg 53, running out to nothing at the outfall. It is only the lower portions of these drains that are being dealt with, the Board seeing the necessity of getting this work done forthwith, so as to benefit all the district during the coming winter. It was decided to call tenders for the work on these two drains, returnable on Friday the sth June next. The Board decided to replace all existing bridges, and provide good gates, where it considers the same necessary. Steps have been taken to obtain a loan of £SOOO, and the Board intends to push on with the drainage of the whole district at the earliest possible moment. Any alterations that may be required in the Eureka drain will not stop the work on the "A" drain being proceeded with; for the main drain will be made above the place where it discharges into the Eureka drain, irrespective of what may have to be done to that drain.
