Raglan News.
The event of the week has been the Congregational Church tea meeting which was held in the Public Hall la3t Friday. The weather being beautifully fine, the function was liberally patronised and the large hall was packed with people. After the tea an item fully appreciated, a very enjoyable concert was rendered, at the conclusion of which the hall was cleared for games which lasted till midnight.
Although Sir Joseph Ward's promised visit is anxiously looked for- -s ward to, day follows day without any . definite date being fixed. The Raglan County Council was to have met in Raglan last week, but have postponed their meeting to synchronise with the Premier's visit. When Sir Joseph does come, if he really is coming, he will open the Opotoru bridge and the new Courthouse, the Catholics also having wired to see if it is possible to get him to lay the foundation stone of the church they are about to erect. The local talent are rehearsing for a minstrel entertainment and concert in aid of the hall funds.
Although the weather and sea at Raglan have not been at all rough lately there seems to have been rough weather north and south for the steamers which serve this port failed to put in an appearance for over a week, the Waitangi being barbound at Waitara for 9 tides and the Clay-, more being similarly treated at Hokianga. An albino pigeon was shot at Waingaro last week and sold immediately afterwards for £2, the purchaser sending it to an Auckland taxiderimist, who, I understand, pronounces it unique. White pheasants have been shot in the district on at least two occasions, but I never before heard of a pure white native pigeon. There was another tangi last week at Ohautira. The. natives. in- that locality seem to be passing out very rapidly, which is a pity, for they are rather more progressive than the average. Last year they did a lot of clearing and have recently bought £200 worth of grass seed for surface sowing. They are also building an up to date house with bath room and many other conveniences unusual to their race. The house, I believe, is to cost about £450—Own Correspondent.
