Literary Sweating.
Here is a choice instance of literary sweating referred to in London Truth: —What is a living wage for a librarian in a public library? The Corporation of Sutherland advertises for two assistant librarians, with a "commencing salary" of £65 per annum—--25s a week. It will be seen from the following extract that although this is the commencing salary at Sunderland, the candidate must have commenced somewhere else and stuck to it for five years—presumably at a lower salary still—and must be a highly educated man, competent to undertake teaching as well as library work:—"The Corporation are about to appoint two assistant librarians to assist in the organisation of three branch libraries. Applicants must produce proof of good education and a thorough training of at least five years in public library work, which is to include a practical knowledge of the Dewey system of classification, and of cataloguing in English, Latin, and French. Assistants are required to take the Library Association correspondence classes. Commencing salary £65 per annum." I wonder what the Corporation pays its scavengers?
