Inspection of Potatoes.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Dunedin, Last Night.
In regard to the recent trouble over the inspection of potatoes at the port of arrival instead of at the port of departure, as formerly, the following telegram has been received locally from the Prime Minister:—“l am advised by the Minister for Agriculture that inspection does not apply to New Zealand potatoes, but to potatoes beyond the sea, so that there must be some misunderstanding about the matter.” The Commissioner of Customs, the Hon. J. A. Millar, telegraphed:—“As yeti have received no information as to the reasons for the application respecting potatoes. On receipt of same I will go carefully into the matter.”
Local merchants are of opinion that the inspection of potatoes at the port of arrival only applies to Australian potatoes, but failing definite information they are disinclined to take any responsibility on their own shoulders. As a consequence, although exceedingly large consignments are corning forward, business is practically dead.
