Princess Victoria of Wales, spent several hours at the Franco-British Exhibition, which was opened today. _ _ Mr Yves Guyot, in a letter to the London Times, urges that the exhibition should be open on Sundays, otherwise thousands of Frenchmen, who would cross the Channel on Saturday and return on Sunday night, would be unable to visit it. English Sabbatarians are opposing the Sunday opening. jpp - THE OPENING CEREMONY. London, May 15. The formal opening of the FrancoBritish Exhibition was marred by rain and the general incompleteness of the exhibition. The Prince and Princess of Wales, who drove through the streets in an open carriage, met with an enthuthusiastic reception. The function was attended by members of the aristocracy, French statesmen, and representatives of the colonies. The Prince of Wales declared the exhibition open in the presence of 30,000 people. He was especially glad to assist in the inauguration of the exhibition, which was the outcome of the generous co-operation of the great French nation, with which the British people were connected in close and friendly relations. He expressed the nation’s gratitudfe to the French Government for the hearty and liberal support they had given. He welcomed their representatives, and rejoiced that the movement had been so keenly and generously promoted by the oversea Dominions. His Royal Highness congratulated all who were responsible for the marvellous and beautiful creation, and trusted that the exhibition would stimulate an interchange of knowledge, strengthen the brotherhood of the nations, and promote peace and civilisation. The additional ceremonies were abandoned, owing to the rain. During the day 130,000 attended.
