An Unprovoked Assault.
-——- By Telegraph.—Press Association Waihi, Last Night.
When leaving the recreation reserve last evening Donald McKinnon, a son of Sergeant McKinnon, of the local police force, was assaulted by a man named Richards, and so injured by a blow over the eye that it necessitated the application of several stitches.
Richards came before the Police Court this morning, Dr. Craig and Messrs R. H. Holmes and H. W. Moore, J.’sP. presiding, on the charge of assaulting and beating the informant, and in pleading guilty alleged provocation. Considerable evidence was taken, and the Bench came to the conclusion that the assault was a most unprovoked case. Richards received the full penalty of two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and was mulcted in the witnesses’ and medical costs amounting to £6 3s.
