WAIKATO v. AUCKLAND. I The Auckland team arrived from Cambridge on Saturday and play commenced at 10.45. Winning the toss. ;" ; ale the visiting captain elected to bat ar,d sent Elliot and Philson to the wickets, the former facing the bowling of Turbott. Runs came slowly, as the bowlers especially Pomevoy, whose first seven overs produced only seven runs, had to be treated with respect. However the score mounted, and a double change was effected, Shepherd relieving Turbott and Gleeson taking the other end. A separation was made at last, Turbott catching Elliott, 29, in the slips off Shepherd. One wicket for 54. Marcroft followed and commenced to score rapidly, Philson meanwhile playing carefully. With the total at 72, and his own score 13, Marcroft was well caught by Shepherd at squareleg. With the advent of Hutcbings some smart running between the wickets was seen, many short runs being stolen. At 19 however, he was run out—the partnership having realised 43. Sale was next and should have been easily caught, when he had made two; it was an expensive mistake, for, scoring quickly, he made top score of 37 before being caught. The total ineluded one hit for six over the boundary. Philson, after carrying his tally to 36 was caught off a miss hit after a patient and laudable innings. After lunch the remaining batsmen did not stay long—Gleeson's tempting offbreaks inducing them to hit into the field where some good catches were made—and the last wicket fell at 167. The bowling honours were divided among Turbott, 2 for 55; Shepherd, 3 for 31; and Gleeson, 4 for 47. The ground fielding was fair, the rough surface being against clean picking up; but the catching—with the exception of one or two mistakes—was very safe. Pomeroy and .'Kirkman opened the Waikato innings, McNeill bowling from the southern end, and five runs came from the over. Then facing Re'stieaux, Pomery hit sixteen off his first six balls—a six, a four, and three twos. Both men scored rapidly until at 40 Pomeroy, in trying to hook a short pitched ball from McNeill missed it and retired lbw for a well made 26. Gleeson who was next stayed long enough to see Kirkman caught and bowled for a vigorous 20. Shepherd and Turbott came and went, then Gleeson was run out, but Fearless and Reid made a good stand, putting on 31 for the sixth wicket before the : former was bowled by Dingle. His j score of 19 included some fine strokes. j Reid was run out after making 15 • and the innings closed for 114, 53 behind Auckland's total. The visitors' j fielding was very good, Sale and | Marcroft especially showing well. The bowling honours were well ! divided, McNeill. Marcroft, and j Dingle, each claiming two victims. Eastgate and Caro, one each. Auckland went in again in a failing light and lost 3 wickets for 34, Dinnison getting 22, and Eastgate not out, 9. The following are the scoics:
