Saturday Closing

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. A meeting of shopkeepers opposed to the Saturday half holiday was held last night, when a reply was received from the Minister for Labour that no alteration in the day could be made till next year. After long discussion, the following motion was carried by 18 to 2: —"That this meeting agrees, owing to the Government refusing the request of shopkeepers to alter the statutory half holiday to Wednesday; that a thorough canvass of the town be made for signatures of shopkeepers willing to close on Wednesdays and on Saturdays, and if the majority agree, that the alteration take place from 22nd April." The object of the action is to test the law.
