There are not many people nowadays who can walk any distance at all without feeling used up. Walking is becoming less necessary each year, for public vehicles are continually increasing in number. The children of this generation do not walk nearly as much as did the children of the last generation. Each future generation will walk less than the one that preceded it, until the time will probably come when people will find it impossible to walk, excejt in a very limited way. And who knows but the time may finally come when people can’t walk at all. Stranger things than that have happened. It is an inevitable law of nature that the part of the body which is not used in time become useless.
A peculiar incident which occurred on the southward bound express from Christchurch recently is reported in the Ashburton Mail. A lady, carrying an infant, boarded the train at Christchurch, and, desiring to make a small purchase, and at the same time to bid good bye to a friend, she asked a fellow passenger —a single young lady—if she would be good enough to hold her baby—a request that was immediately responded to. In the meantime Jthe married lady was so engrossed in conversation with a friend on the railway platform that she failed to hear the signal for the departure of the train, which moved off from the station without her. The passengers of the carriage in which the young lady and her charge were travelling extended their symptahy to the [former, and advised her to leave the child in charge of the slalionrnaaler at the first stopping place-5 This official, Ja single mar, courteously declined the charge, and the young lady was compelled to take the infant to Timaru, where she intended remaining to await its rightful owner.
