THE STEAMER NIWARU.
(BY TELEGBAPH —PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Napiek, Saturday. The judgment in the Niwaru case was that the ship had evidently overrun her distance through the captain forgetting to allow for the heavy swell following the vessel. Ihe Court were satisfied that the vessel had been navigated in a seamanlike manner, as the captain never left the bridge from Portland Island, but he was deceived by the leadman's reports, as it was imposdhle to get soundings of 13 fathoms at the speed the steamer was travelling, and alio by the distance from the Bluff Hill lieht. They did nob consider that there was that degree of negligence on the Captain's part which justified the Court dealing with his ce.-titicite ; but he deserved severe censure for not stopping the vessel when he reached his supposed position. The Captain's certificate was returned, and he was ordered to pay the costs of the enquiry. The Court expressed the opinion that the port was imperfectly lighted, and this should be remedied.
