MAJOR MADOCKS’ NEW APPOINTMENT. London, November 8. Major Mndccks, who so distinguished himself with the New Zealanders in South Afrioalastyear hasnot becnallowcd to remain idle very long. He had a delightful trip Home from New Zealand, via America, when he remained several weeks, and has been in England only ten days. Immediately on his arrival, although his leave, hid still two months to run, lie volunteered at the War Office for active si i vice, and Lis turn has come at once. General lan Hamilton has resigned the position ot Military Secrttaiy at the War Office, and is go ng out to South Afiict to serve as Chief of Kitchener’s staff, and will tike his departure on Saturday. He lias offered Major Madorks a position on the Headquarters Army Staff, which the latter has gladly accepted ; so he will accompany Sir Du as Deputy - Assistant-Adjutdiit-Gvner.il. All Major Madncks l friends in the colony —and there arc many— will he dciigh'e I to hear of his good foituup.

A week or so ago we published a paragraph stating (hat Lieutenant John Kelly, an Australian, hid been killed. We regret to learn that the young man mentioned is a brother of Mr T. H. Kelly, of Cambridge, The deceased was in New Zealand some yeais ago, hut afterwards went to Australia, whence he and another brother went to South Africa with the Australian Bushmen’s Contingent. Being ioo heavy for that contingent, the brothers joined different regiments, the deceased choosing the Scottish Horse, to which ho belonged at the time, of his death.
