A TERRIBLE EXPLOSION
TWO KILLED AND MANY INJURED. Sydney, November 13. A TERRIBLE explosion of gns occurred in the new workings of the Burwood Colliery, near Newcastle. Fortunately but few men were in the vicinity at the time. It is supposed that a lamp fired a quantity of undetected gas hanging to the roof. A miner named Molloy was killed instantly, another named Patterson was hopelessly injured, and several others had slight injuries. Owing to the excellence of the ventilation no effect was produced by the after damp. Later. Patterson is dead. A third man named Champion is in a serious condition. Brock, the under manager of the colliery, visited the spot a few minutes before the explosion. He was, with two other men, swept along the shaft. Brock is suffering from nasty cuts on the head, and severe shock. The others sustained slight injuries. All lights were extinguished, and there was considerable excitement. The rescue party quickly arrived.
