BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Thk Board met at Auckland yesterday. The Finance Committee recommended that the Board invite applications for the position of Director of the Auckland Technical School at a salary of £450 per annum.

The Teachers’ Selection Committee recommended that the following appointments be made—Miss L. M, Browne to Kimihia. They also recommended that the appointment of a>sistant teachers to the Huntly and Waihi schools be held over until receipt of new scale of staffs and salaries parsed by Parliament; that the appointment of pupil teachers to Cambridge and Otorohunga be deferred until January next.— The report was adopted. Mr D. Petrie, Chief Inspector, wrote as follows 1 would respectfully urge the Board, in arranging the staff of the District High Schoohs, to make provision for the teaching of French rather than Latin. French eushr nes a great modern literature, and is one of the great vehicles of scientific culture. In no branch of modern knowledge can a serious student afford to ignore works and researches issued to the world in this language. Latin ,bas now, i deed has long had, merely an academic, an antiquarian, and a philological value, and might with great advantage be entirely withdrawn from the course of study that ministers to a modern liberal education.’ Mr Bladts said : ‘ I believe in Latin.’ Mr Luke: ‘So do I.’ On the motion of the Chairman the letter was referred to the Inspectors in conference for their opinions. Mr Hobbs asked the chairman what steps it was proposed to take in regard to the classification of teachers under the new Act. The Chairman said that as soon as the Act was received from Wellington it would have to he considered by the Board at a special meeting. Nothing could be done until they had the Act before them. Mr Lambe said all their teachers would have to be placed on three months’ notice, in accordance with the regulations, and then re classified.
