On Friday evening the members of ths .School Committee met in the Council Chambers. Present: Messrs Creenslade (chairman), T. Prince, A. Kusabs, and D. Turnwakl. Mr H, Roche was elected a member to till the vacancy caused by Mr Chittend;u having left the district. The Education Board notified the committee of the payment of £1 capitation grant for the quarter e uliug September 31st. It was dccidtd to hold tne annual picnic iu the school grounds on a date to be decided upon, and that subscription lists be sent round, and also that a social and dance be held on the same evening in the Public Hall. A letter was received from Mr White re establishing a High School iu Hamilton. The Cha’rmau spoke iu favour of such an institution, and said they had one at the Thames, ami they ought t) give the matter their earnest consideration. Aher some discussion it was decided that the Chairn an write to Mr White for further information. A circular was received from the Education Board defining what holidays would be given, thus taking the matter out of the hands of the committee. The opinion of the meeting was that in country districts the teachers suffered loss owing to the non-attendance on show days, etc., as it lowered the average, and the committee would have no power to grant a holiday.
