HUNTLY.
Volunteers.—On the Kina’s birthday a fair number of the local volunteers went out to the range to compete for prizes generously donated by Mrs D. Talbot, Messrs Cole and Co., Mr E. Walton, Northern Roller Mills, Mr Cohen and the Singer Manufactering Co., all of Auckland. For shoot'ng purposes the day was as bad as could be, a howling gale blowing obliquely with varying force. As a result the scoring was small. The Company Handicap, five was won by Private A, Turner; Captain Elliott, Sergeant Dunn, Privates Ralph, L. G. Raynor, and Hall coming in the order named. The Ladies’ Pea Rifle Competition evoked considerable interest and was eventually won by Mrs Raynor, Mrs AIL. Turner coming second. An open sweepstake was woe by Private McFarlane. The voUy-firing competition was deflated off, pending more favourable atmospheric conditions. Appointment.— Huntly residents have learned with unfeigned regret that the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Assembly, whose sittings at Dunedin have just finished, have appointed the Rev. John Egerton Ward to be Maori Missionary, his headquarters to be in the King Country. Since bis appointment to the Huntly charge Mr Ward has ma le many friends ; he has been foremost in every good work, and has lent a strong and helping hand to further every cause calculated to promote the interests of the township, while his private benedictions and kindnesses have been innumerable. Farmers’ Union.—About forty faimers met in the school at Ohinewai on Saturday to form a branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr Killick and Mr Hooten were appointed chairman and secretary pro. tern. The former introduced the business by reading the platform of the Union as contained in the rules and regulations of the N.Z.F.U. A committee consisting of Messrs Hooten, Birss, Angus McKinnon, Caleb Hill, E. Foster and N. Dingle were appo : n l ed. It was resolved to write Mr Glass, informing him of what had been done, and ask him to appoint a day on which he could meet the members of the branch to discuss matters relating to the interests of farmers. Seventeen members were enrolled. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman and Secietary. —(Own Correspondent).
