NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.
(BY TELEOEATH—PRESS ASSOCIATION). ' Christchurch, This Day. At the meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company, the repor recom mended the payment of a dividend of 5 per cent, absorbing £25,603, and to carry forward £BB2O. Mr Bowen, chairman, said it was a long time since a dividend of 5 per cent had been paid, but the directors hoped to continue it. They weie gradually increasing the size of their steamers as large ones paid best. The Company would be glad to open a line to Vancover but could not get a reasonable contribution from the Government, and had to take up an offer by the New South Wales and Queensland Governments. They had also tried to foster the trade with South Africa, but found it very difficult to deal with as these was no return cargo. At present the Olarama was ready to take cargo there, but all that offered was a beggarly cargo of a few tons of moat and butter.
