THE ARIADNE WRECK
Sydney, October 18. Kerry and Freke have been remanded to Christchurch in custody of Detective McGrath and Constable McLeod, who produced the original warrants and identified the accused.
When charged to-day with casting away, in company with others, the yacht Ariadne, the accused declared themselves innocent of the charge. Detective Goulder deposed that when he arrested accused he took possession of Froke’s portmanteau. Amongst the contents was a book containing what is purported to be a conversation between Freke and Captain Mumford with reference to the alleged blackmail of T. C. Kerry, relating to the wreck of the Ariadne. Freke said: ‘Yes, that is true, and the whole of it is in my own handwriting.’ Ho afterwards denied the writing. Amongst Kerry’s effects witness found some letters and a packet of papers, marked Mumfoid’s papers. Don’t open till you reach London; also the day book referring to the payment of £l3l to Captain Mumford in various sums.
