ANTHRAX AT TAMAHERE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln your issue of October 15th you have a letter from Mr Bryant, senr., in which one or two slight mistakes are, I believe, quite inadvertently made, which I wish to correct. In weighing evidence, it is of the utmost importune*, that we should have everything as definite and reliable as possible. Mr Bryant states ‘ that his son’s turnip field was manured with the New Zealand Drug Company's special turnip manure.’ This is only partly correct, as, according to Mr Bryan', junr's. information, although the bulk of the field was so manured, he ran effort of manure, and used hones and phosphate got from a neighbour to finish. Mr Bryant also talks of an animal that had died in the fie'd years before. Asa matter of fact, although the owner of the field had previously in clewing, noticed Hones, when at my request, after tlr* attack, a look out was kept, for any tones, all that could be found was one small bone, although the land has since been harrowed and ploughed. One fact I wish to point out that my cattle were quite fiee from the trouble, until the turnips were harrowed, although they had been fed on them for a mouth previously.’ Within two or three day a after harrowing the first one died. My belief is that in barrowing the infection was brought to the rut face, and I also incline to the belief, * that it was from the manure used, and not from the piece of bone found that the infection came. I wish we could definitely locate the cause. In future, although we cannot get along well, without the use of bone manure, still I shall always dread another attack from these pestering microbes. Our only safety would he if we could have all hones used sterilised under strict Government supervision, and should any attack occur then let them fully recompense the sufferer for any loss,—l am, etc., G. A. Cruickshank
