Clouds of white butterflies have hung over the town and the surrounding country. So great have been their numbers that they gave the appearance of a snow storm, and the houses, streets ami trees rapidly became quite white. The butterflies even penetrated to the interior of the houses, and all windows had to he closed. Scientists have as yet no theory to account for the strange occurrence. A great price was recently paid for a freehold property in Cornhill, London. The property in question consists ot a substantial building of five floors and a basement, the laud having a frontage of 17ft by a depth of 44ft, and an area of 752 superficial feet. For these premises there was the keenest competition, as they appealed alike to investors seeking an outlet for capita', and to public companies requiring commanding offices in this central place of business. Tho property was eventually sold at £40,800, which is at the rate of £54 per supcificial foot, or £2,400 per foot frontage, and equal bo £2,350,000 per acre. This is believed to be about the record price obtained for properly in tho city of London.
Much interest has been aroused in Vienna in connection with the strange case of Major Kristuseck, who has been arrested in Buenos Ayres, The major is supposed to have gone out to Argent m in order to v.lid up the affairs of his deceased bio' Tier, who was a merchant in Buenos Ayres. It is alleged that when Major Kristuseck arrived there and investigated matters he found mysterious and siispiro'-js circumstances surrounding the death of his brother. The latter left a large fortune amounting to, it is said, £040,000, the whole of which had been taken possession of by a relative who was not the legal heir to the fortune. Major Kristuseck was pushing forward bis enquiries when ha was suddenly arrested and confined in prieon without trial. It is affirmed that the Austrian Government will intervene on the strength of sworn evidence rredved from several Austrian residents at Buenos Ayres. Try The Waikato Argus office, f for horse cards.
