The boot trade is still dull, but seasonable improvements arc expected. Clothing trade is very busy, daily advertisements appearing for hands. The retail trade (general) is steady an I good. As to uuikil'ed labour there are fewei applications for work than in preceding months, rpiito a number of men have got employment on the electric tratneo;.tract i d other local works, many others who came into town expecting employment on there works have gone book to their usual employment in the country. At Gisborne-the building trades arc active in all depul tments, and all competent local tradesmen are kept fully employed. Buildings arc in course of erection, and those for which tenders have baen called, total in cost from £IO,OOO to £12,000. The engineering trades are kept busy in gi mwal •inf*’. Fair business is being done in the retail trade (general). Several tenders have been called for bushfeliiog and scrubcutting during the month. it is antiepated that a largo area will be. felled ibis season. Both local freezing wotks aie resuming full work for the ensuing season. As to unskilled labour there are not marry unemployed, and of these a number are awaiting promised work when circumstances arc more favourable. Road works, prosecution of which has been partially suspended are to be put in hand shortly by joed bodies, some of whom are obtaining loans to cany on works in the hack country. There are indications of very general employment during the next few months. The following is a li-t of artisans and other workmen employed on eo operative works:—Department of Roans; 2221 labourers. Public Works Department Railways: Kawakawa Southwards, four artisans and 59 labourers ; Hellt-nsville-North ward?, four artisans and 141 labourers ; Paeroa-Waihi, seven artis ns 136 labourers; Gisborue-Karaki, five ai tisans and 88 labourers ; North Island Main Trunk, 109 artisms and 080 labourers; Stratford-\Yhanganiomon_a, 11 artisans and 81 labourers; total, 259 artisans and 3106 labourers.
