PRESENTATION.
(BY TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION). Napier, This Day, Mu G. H. Swan, ex-Mayor, has been presented with a purse of 500 sovereigns and an address on leaving for Hawera. The Mayor referred to Mr Swan’s public spirit during the 37 years he had lived in Napier. For 24 years he had sat in the Council, and was Mayor 16j years without a break. He had filled other public offices, and represented Napier in Parliament and been a member of the Harbour Board for 17 years. The Explanade, of which Napier was justly proud, and other works, were monuments to Mr Swan’s increasing efforts for the benefit of the town. The presentation was spontaneously contributed to by people, not only of the town, but of the province.
In responding, Mr Swan said he hoped that Napier would in a few years give him the pleasure of opening their finished breakwater, which was the only thing wanted to make the town progress as it should.
