McNICOL AND CO’S ANNUAL HORSE FAIR.

Messrs McNicol and Go’s annual Cambridge horse hair took place last week, and was continued from 11 a.m on Wednesday till noon tu Saturday. There was a representative attendance of buyers from all parts of the province, including Messrs Wm. Hawkins and G. Holmes, of Christchurch, Hocken and Sinclair, of Fielding, G. Lind and H. Clark, of Woodville, and several others. Bidding was brisk throughout, aud good prices were obtained. For draughts prices ruled 15 per cent and 20 per cent higher than those of this time last year, and almost the same rise was noticeable in the better class of hacks and light harness horses. Although all the horses were not sold it was not because the supply exceeded the demand—vendors asked iu some eases rather high prices. The Southern buyers were prepared to purchase a large number of draughts, aud obtained a few only, stating that they could not possibly give the ruling values. If the district is to continue breeding, un outside market mast he looked for, and we trust in future those coining from a distance in search of horses will be better rewarded for their enterprise in ai tending the sales. Ninetythree unbroken light horses sold—good sorts making from £l4 to £25 ss, the latter price being obtlined for a four-year-old Mountaineer mare Fold on account of T. D. Reid, of VVaiuku. Three hundred and fifty-eight hacks and light harness horses were disposed of, bestsorts ranging from £2O to £29, the Kukubia Estate making the latter price for a four-year-old by Hen Lomond—hack mare. Other good prices were : 0. Day, £26 10a for a four-year-old by Merrylegs II; J. and W. Anderson, £2O and £24 lOsfor cwostrong, well-paced and aged hacks; J. Barugh £25 for a Freedom six-year-oid mare well-paced and a hold jumper; J- Graham £25 for a hack ; Woodlands Estate, £2B for a 4-year-old Merrrymaker; Alf. Main aud J. B. Teasdale, £27 amd £29 for two Muska-peer-s; Rukuhia, £2O, £2B 10s aud £29 10s for three strong harness sorts ; J. McNicol, £lB 5s for a 4-year-old Dentist —Darby mare; J. VV. Burnett, hack, syrs, Hornpipe Lorna Dome; J. Browne, S. and T. Wilson, C. N. Murray, M. Harrison, J. Allwool, E. Robertson aud J. Bukowsky obtained prices from £2O to £25 for strong harness horses. Fifty-one unbroken draughts sold. The Galatea Estate made £ls 5s to £29 10s for a draft of fourteen, and the Woodlands Estate £22 Is to £34s Is for seven. Other prices «ere:R. Taylor, £25 and £26 for two Lord Clydes; W. Hetherington, £3O 10s for a Willie Wallace filly; Geo. Watt, £32 for a Royal Conqueror gelding. One hundred and eighty - nine broken draughts sold, ranging up to £54 10s, which Alf. Main got for a mare in foal; A. R. Hine made £54 for a handsome 9-yrar-old gelding brought from Napier ; C. Lake, £SO each for two 4 year-old geldings by Young Dumnore ; Rotoranai Estate, £4O to £SO for heavy draughts, and £32 to £39 10s for medium draughts by Chancellor; C. J. Storey, £4B, £49 10s and £SO for three heavy draught geldings by Royal Cmqueror, Commodore, and Belter Times ; Rukuhia Estate, £25 to £36 for medium draughts; C- Day, £4B 10s for a Better Times gelding ; Isaac Hodgson, £4O aud £l4 for two 3-year-olds by Royal Conqueror; J. Taylor, £35 to £4B 10s for heavy draughts, and £24 to £3B 10s for medium draughts ; Ruigiuru Estate, £25 10s to £35; E. Allen, £4B 10a and £49 for two geldings by Lord Glasgow ; Matamata Estate, up to £35 for medium draughts ; Woodlands Estate, up to £32 15s for heavy draught aged mare. Other draughts from J. Cricket, made from £27 10s to £4B. Of the stallions, the draughts Burnside and Major Fleming were sold for 60 and 71 guineas respectively, and the thoroughbred Freedom went a bargain at 27 guineas. Altogether 046 horses were offered, and of these 694 were disposed of,
