THE LATE PRESIDENT

(Received Sept, 18, 11.40 a m.) Melbourne, September 17. The Federal message of condolence to Mrs McKinley, after expressing sorrow for the crime that had removed from the field of labour a man of upright life, adds, ‘ His untimely loss at the zenith of his intellectual power is profoundly mourned in Australia, where he was regarded as the proven friend of the people of the British Empire.’ REMOVING THE COFFIN. MINISTERIAL CHANGES. A MEMORIAL SERVICE. Washington, September 18. The coffin was carried from White House, Washington, to the rotunda, and the same catafalque used as for Presidents Lincoln and Garfield. It was escorted by veterans of the grand army, and followed by Colonel Rooseveldt, ex-President Cleveland, State Governors, Senators and Congressmen. Dense crowds uncovered, though rain was falling, and everywhere there was deep emotion. The rotunda was packed. A simple Methodist service was held. Then the face of the dead was obtaining a glance. The crowds converging to the capitol were badly regulated. A semipanic ensued, many fainted and 50 were injured. The Hon. Elihu Root, Secrectary of War, is expected to succeed the Hon. John Hay as Secretary of Treasury within a fortnight. London, September 18.

The last act of the Methodist Con* ference was a memorial service for Mr McKinley, the pastor of whose church was present.
