Mrs Drake, who has been arrested in Auckland on a charge of stealing her husband’s furniture, is alleged to have eloped with McGovern, who was a wharf labourer here, after her husband had made over to her a considerable amount of city property. Quantities of water-worn coal and timber have been cast up by the sea in the neighbourhood of Trrawhiti, some of the timber being of the kind used in stowing the cargo of the s.a. Chau, which was lost between Cook' Strait and Lyttelton some years ago. Auckland, This Day. The Supreme Court was occupied by a case in which Thou W. Cntbush sued W. Legrove for £2OO tor slander. L was alleged that the defendant had accused plaintiff of stealing 20 cases of fruit, stating that a warrant was out for his arrest, and that he had evidence enough to give him seven years. The defence denied using these words, and alleged what was said was in order to aid in the detection of the thief, and was privileged. The case is unfinished. Nelson, This Day. John Packer, an elderly man, was crushed to death by a dr-y capsizing on him in the Maitai Valley. His son Howard was badly kicked in trying to extricate him. Dunedin, This Day. Wnt. Troy, a greaser on t he Karmnea, was drowned at Port Chalmers. He fell off the wharl at night. The Patriotic Committee has paid out £2513. One hundred aud fifty men reived assistance, aud 122 were furnished with outfits. A balance of £3129 is still left. Timabu, This Day. The Supreme Court began and finished to-day. John Robinson, farmer, was convicted of making a f-dse declaration under the Laud for Settlement Act, aud fined £2O. Christchurch, This Day. The three men blown out to sea turned up safely at Gore Bav, Cheviot, much exhausted. The wind veered round aud blew them back. The tug Lyttelton, searching for them, hid a very rough time, and experienced much difficulty in getting hack to port.
