LAWN TENNIS
A tknnis tournament was commenced at C:tubridi;« yesterday, which it is hoped will completed in about a fortnight : in fact players must, do their best tn eet their games by that time, or they will have to be forfeited. Only two contests took place, lvimely one iadtcs single, an 1 one gentlemen's single. The winner must pain two sets out ol three. The ladies who played weie Mi ; s Owynneth and Miss Pickering, the latter receiving half 30. Miss Owynneth won the sets being 6-1. r-. ii 1 GO. Miss Pickering won the three first three games and fought several of the others very s'ubbornly, but the older player wa< to good. The other game.was between Messrs S. Kmpson and .VI. McDermott. The former received 15 and the latter owed half 15. which made the handicap a stiff one. Mr Hmpson won, the scores being 13-1 and b-O. The way this ii.an'a playiut! looks as if he would almost have a walk over with the handi cap he receives.
