A LETTER FROM KRUGER. HIS OPINION ON THE SUBJECT GEN. WHITE STILL WEAK FROM FEVER. A TOUCHING FAREWELL WITH HIS TROOPS. A DISAPPOINTMENT FOR THE BOER 5 !. BRITAIN’S REPLY TO KRUGER AND STEYN. THE CAMPAIGN TO CONTINUE. (Received March 12, 9.15 a m.) London, March 11. A letter from Kruger was found in a commandants’ bag among the stores captured by the British on the Tugela. Th 3 letter which is dated . January 27th stated: “If Ladysmith is re" lieved the Boers’ cause will indeed b e doubtful and precarious, but if Lady' smith is captured by us we will secure peace and independence.” General White is still feeble from the attack of fever contracted during the siege. He has left Ladysmith for Stormberg. His leave taking of bis troops was a touching one. On his arrival at Pietermaritzburg he was presented with an ad* dress by the corporation. In reply be remarked that the garrison at Ladysmith when supplies became short, measured their rations in the hollow of their hands. In all the hardships and trials the troops were cheerful. So presumptuous were many of the Boers that they actually sent trucks to convey the garrison to Pretoria. It is unofficially stated that Britain replied to Kruger and Steyn that the campaign will continue until the growing prospects of restored peace are further strengthened, enabling Britain to formulate terms.
