THE TAKAPUNA MEETING. POKOMOKO AND HIS JOCKEY AND OWNER DISQUALIFIED. (BY TELEGRAPH— PKESfi ASSOCIATION). Auckland, Last Night. A meeting of the stewards of the Takapuna Jockey Club was held this afternoon to further inquire into the running of Pokomoko in the hurdle race at Devonport, on Saturday. Mr E. W. Allison, presided, and there was a full attendance. The inquiry had bein adjourned on Saturday last to enable the Club to get evidence bearing out Keith's (the owner) statement, that C. E. Major, of Hawera, aud G. Ke'ls, of Maimersstreet, Wellington, had put £3O on Pokomoko for him in Saturday's race. Telegrams were read from Wellington, one from the Inspector of Police, stating that no such person as Kells was living in Manners-street, but that a man of that name went to the Transvaal with the Contingent. C. E. Major wired that Keith had instructed him to put £5 on Pokomoko for Saturday's hurdle race, but he did not do so. Mr Wm. Grey, starter at the meeting, said he was standing between the bend and the terraces when Pokomoko was finishing. He thought his rider had a strong hold on the horse, so strong that he doubted whether he would get over the last hurdle. Pokomoko was well out on the course the whole way. F. Lind, the rider of Pokomoko, in his evidence said he did not knows Kells. He had seen the horse stop worse than he did at Devonport. He could not have run second. He madej every endeavour to sit down and ride his mount from the second to last fence. He did not give his horse the whip because he would have stopped more. The Stewards desided to recall the owner of Pokomoko (J. Keith), but although known to be in town he could not be found. The club's decision was that the horse Pokomoko, his jockey and owner be disqualified for two years.
