Wellington, List Night. Mr Seddon addressed a large crowd from the New -Zealand Times' balcony. He said the result of the election showed that the people strongly approved of the Government policy and administration. The result was a complete answer to the charges of maladministration aud want of purity. Ho claimed that the Govern ment so far would have a majority of thirty in the new Parliament, and returns still to come in, might increase the majority.
(BY TELEGRAPH. PKESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Last Night.
The election was the quietest and most devoid of incidents ever known. There is absolutely nothiug to record. The polling in the early part of the day was Bimvll and mostly done in the afternoon. Strict instruction were issued to keep touts away from the doors of the booths in order to prevent such scenes as were so much compla'nod of in 1896, and this had a great deal to do with the mild nuture of the proceedings. Enormous crowds assembled outside the newspaper offices to-night, but there was very little disorder, although a few ripe eggs were fired now and then. Fisher's re-election came as a great surprise. When two-thirds of the returns had come to hand Hutcheson, Atkinson and Hislop, the Opposition ticket, were looked upon as safe, but Fisher's total was greatly swelled by returns from the last booths, and he took third place from Bislop. Crowds remained outside the newspaper offices until the early hours of the'morning. Auckland, Last Night. There was splendid weather for the elections and gre-it interest is taken in the result, the women polling heavily. Ciood order and good humour prevailed, the candidates exerting themselves to the utmost. No one with certainty can predict the result for the city. The brewers' months ago had . bespoken all the cabs of the city, and everything ou
wheels was pressed into the service for one party or otlu?r. Complaints were rife, during the clay at the inadequacy of the arrangements for polling at some of the booths in the suburbs. Business men complain that although the booths were open at 9 a.m., they did not get into town till 10.45 to business, owing to the primitive arrangements for polling.
