Three of the defendants were fined £2 and costs 7s for falsely stating the length of their residence in the electoral district, a Chinaman was fined 10s and another defendant working in the prohibition cause was fined £5 and cost*. Donedin, Last Night. John Macgregor, ex-M.L,C, will explain at the Garrison Hall to-morrow night why he refused to accept nomination to the Council for a further term, and will announce his candidature for either Duncdin or Oamarn. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Under a recent Act the Harbour Board has been taking property near tho new railway station conipulsorily for the purposes of improvements. A number of the smaller c'aim9 were settled by the Compensation the owners in each case getting a little more than the Board originally offered. Judgment in the largest claim of all was delivered to day, in which A Sample claimed £SOOO and was offered £2200. The Court awarded £3380, with £73 costs-. Freda Ghoul or Gould, a young German woman from Queensland, threw herself into the harbour last night. An old man, named Whiley, who tried to stop her sprained his leg rather badly, but the girl was rescued by others, though resisting frantically. To-day she was remanded for mcdicnl treatment, as she appears to be half witted. After her roscuc she expressed her determination to repeat the attempt. The body of an o'd man named Wyatt, was found near Arm Chair Creek, Marlborough. He had evidently fallen into the creek. He wai buried on the spot. Timaru, Last Night. Robert Stewart, a farmer at Totara Valky, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a gun yesterday. He had been suffering from sleeplessness and pains in the head. He leaves a widow and six children.
