TAUPIRI.
o • Finn.—What might have been a fire of considerable dimension.-, causing partial, if not complete, destruction of the railway bridge over the Mangawhara creek at Taupiri, was on Sunday last arrested in its progress by the prompt action taken by two well-known residents of the district. These gentlemen, whilst strolling by the creek side, noticed smoke rising from the centre of the bridge, and rushing quickly to the spot discovered one of the sleepers well alight, and fanned by the strong breeze then prevailing, just bursting into flames. With most commendable promptitude they at ouce'ran to the watei'a edge, and for lack of other means, immersed some old sacks, and with them were able to check the progress of the fliines, not leaving the spot until they were fully satisfied that a'l danger was past. The fire, happening as it did to break out on a Sunday afternoou, would most probably not have beeu discovered by any of the railway servants until the usual survey of the line on the following morning, by which time the bridge must have been completely destroyed. —(A correspondent). ___^_
