WAITETUNA.
Settlers' Ball. The Public Rail, Raplan, was a scene of animation on Friday evening last, loth inst., on the occasion of the complimentary ball tendered as a return to the manager and • employees of the Te Akau Station, for the ball which they had given a few weeks ago. Fortunately the weather proved fine, and in lesponse to the many invitation* sent out quite a large number of young people put in their appearance at the hour appointed, from various parts of the district*. The interior of the hall was beautifully decorated with a {irofosion of evergreens, flowerß, Chinese anterns and flags of various colours ; these, with the handsome dresses of the ladies, formed a pretty scene. The committee, and more especially their energetic Secretary (Mr E. A. Burton), are to be congratulated on the management that carried their gathering to such a successful issu a , and they must have been gratified with the result. The comfort and pleasure of those present were promoted in every possible way. Mr E. Jerome peTformed the duties of M.C. in a satisfactory manner. The floor was in good order, and the splendid -music rendered by Mesdivmes Rastrick, Wallis and Mathias and Miss Pursley was greatly appreciated by the dancers. An excellent supper was supplied, the viands, whioh wero of the choicest description, reflected great credit upon Mr Buchanan, the well-known confectioner of Auck. land, who catered. Dancing was carried on most enthusiastically until the small hours of the morniDg, when one and all agreed that they had spent a most enjoyable time. The following are a few of the dresses worn by the ladies :—Mrs Kastrick, grey silk ; Mrs Wallis, white, white satin ribbon trimmings ; Mrs Mathias, grey silk, pink chiffon sleeves, steel trimmings ; Mrs Langridge, pale blue, pink silk trimmings ; Mrs Rowland, black skirt, white blouse ; Mrs Smith, black and creme ; Mrs C. S. Sutton, fawn ; Mrs Bulford, dark dress ; Mrs Litchfield, dark skirt, blue blouse ; Mrs Hemmingway, black ; Miss Sutton, pale blue ; Miss H. Sutton, dark skirt, pale blue silk blouse ; Miss Hallet, dark skirt, orange silk blouse ; Miss Moon, heliotrope ; Miss 0. Moon, yellow, black lace trimmings ; Miss B. Moon, fawn skirt, pink blouse ; Miss Tapp, pale blue, lace trimmings ; Miss F Tapp, white, yellow silk sash ; Miss Pasooe, white ; Miss Hill, black ; Miss Pursley, pale blue ; Miss Warne, black skirt, heliotrope blouse with chiffon trimmings ; Miss Kescel, dark dress. School Inspection.—Mr Grierson was at the Waitetuna school on a round of inspection lan Tuesday, and found everything working well and satisfactory under the charge of Miss Baston, our new teacher, who has already made herself popular with the scholars and their parents.—(Own Correspondent).
