FAREWELL SOCIAL TO MR AND MRS PALK, IE AWAMUTU.
Whkn it became known that Mr and Mia Palk had decided to leave Te Awarnutu, a number of the members and adherents of the Wesleyan Church resolved to tender to them a farewell sooial, as a slight recognition of the general esteem in which they were held, and also to express the regret felt at their leaving the district, especially by those who had had the privilege ot being intimately acquainted with them. Their departure is a great loss to the community as their influence and Christian example have endeared them to many. The church which had been beautifully decorated under the superintendence of Mrs Gibson was filled f.o overflowing last Friday evening, and a most attractive and interesting musical programme interspersed with recitations, speeches etc. was provided. Mr Palk introduced the Rev. Mr Potts who is to carry on the work in this pait of the circuit. The latter delivered an able and instructive address in which he said he hoped to deepen the impression made by his predecessor, and to build upon the foundation already laid.--He recounted the triumphs of Methodism in the Old Country and America, and trusted that each member would stand by him and help to advance this great cause here.—Mr McGechie gave a short touching address and while regretting the departure of Mr and Mrs Palk referred to the good work done by them, and also to the great influence exerted by their.daughter on the young people in her untiring efforts in connection with the Hand of Hope Society. Mr Palk in a few well chosen words bade the people farewell, and expressed his high appreciation of the kindness he had received, and while regretting parting from them said he should always retain pleasant recollections of his sojourn amongst them while ho trusted his labours had not been in vain. Mrs Palk, in a few humourous remarks, also bade them good-bye and added her thanks for the kindness shown them, and said she felt she was leaving many true friends whom she should not soon forget. After the excellent refreshments, which had been so bonutifully piovided by the ladies of the congregation had been disposed of, tin singing of the hymn " Qod He With You Till We Meet Again," brought the meeting to a close.—(Contributed).
Mr "R. W. Dyer thanks all those »vho voted for him on Thursday last.
